The Sunday Assembly, the ‘Atheist Church’, is coming to Chapel Hill
Sunday Assembly Chapel Hill will launch on Sunday, January 11th, 2015.
The Sunday Assembly (dubbed by the media as the ‘atheist church’), is launching in Chapel Hill on January 11th – I know, we can’t believe it either. Sunday Assembly was founded in London in January 2013, and since then it has exploded across the world with more than 70 Assemblies up and running (it’s the ‘fastest growing church in the world’ according to the Daily Beast).
After hearing about the Sunday Assembly on the news and in social media, local organizers from the Triangle approached Sunday Assembly HQ for help in setting up their own congregation. Now Nichelle Reed, Sara Howe, and the rest of their team are working with the London-based organization to start their own local get-together of like minded people.
Reed said: “Our first meeting will be held at the Hargraves Community Center, but we are looking for a more permanent location.” Howe said: “We welcome volunteers to help us build this community.”
Sunday Assembly is all the best bits of church but without the religion, and with awesome pop songs. Each service is based around a theme, with a guest speaker, poet and songs all inspired by that idea.
The aim is for people to leave energized, vitalized, restored, repaired, refreshed and recharged. No matter what the subject of the Assembly, it will solace worries, provoke kindness and inject a touch of transcendence into the everyday. Sunday Assembly Chapel Hill will be a house of love and compassion, where, no matter what your situation, you are welcomed, accepted and loved.
What’s more, this is just one part of a global story, and by the end of 2014 there will be new Sunday Assemblies up and running in South Africa, Brazil, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Belgium, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Canada. There’ll soon be 100 Sunday Assembly congregations on six continents (there’s no Assembly in Antarctica (yet)).
Sanderson Jones, the co-founder said: “We welcome everyone from across the world to join our wonderful movement. We didn’t expect to go global - but it sure is fun!”
The Sunday Assembly Background
The Sunday Assembly is a godless congregation that celebrates life. Our motto: live better, help often and wonder more. Our mission: to help everyone find and fulfill their full potential. Our vision: A Sunday Assembly in every town, city or village that wants one.
The Sunday Assembly was founded in London in January 2013 by Sanderson Jones and Pippa Evans, who are two comedians who love to celebrate life.
